A common theme between the characters in Outlaw Star is teamwork without which the crew would probably have died a while ago.

Melfina is a unique android that actually has biological as well as mechanical aspects to her physical body, although I have not seen any evidence to the later. She is like a child with the knowledge of an adult. One should not get the wrong idea about her personality though. She has the innocence of a child and the knowledge, not the experience or wisdom if you will, of an adult. It is my opinion that this is one of the reasons she has no problem with being naked all the time in that navigation tube.
