The DVDs finally arrived. Although it took about a month
for the whole process since I paid with a check, it only
took 2 days to arrive after Amazon had shipped it. Now, I
just need collections 2 and 3. The good thing though, is
that now I can start working on episode summaries.Started on 3/13/01
My Outlaw Star DVDs are finally on their way. I like that
the price is like $15 less when I buy online, but it
takes too damn long for the orders to arrive.
Now that I got that out of my system, I was watching OS
on Toonami just a minute ago and it really struck me how
much people die in this and many other anime series. I
mean, damn; Gene gets in a dual, the other dude dies.
Gene gets a dangerous job, the guy who hired him dies.
Not that I don't like it though. That's one of the best
things about anime.

Well now, since I have been looking at various OS pages,
I have heard mixed feelings on this anime. One common
comparison I have found is between it and Cowboy Bebop.
Until I heard these comparisons, I had never heard of
Cowboy Bebop. It's supposed to be some great
space-western movie which has some common themes with
Outlaw Star. I don't know when Cowboy Bebop aired but, I
do know that Outlaw Star is an anime in its own right,
and quite frankly, it kicks ass.
If you are looking for the series, I suggest DVD if
possible, and that
you buy it online from Amazon.Com. It is much cheaper.
The VHS version is cheaper also, but it comes in several
volumes as opposed to the three volumes in the DVD set
which have both the Japanese subtitled and Englished
dubbed (but unedited) versions. The third volume is
supposed to be released this month.

Ok. I have now seen almost every episode that has aired
on Cartoon Network, and I still don't know what the
Galactic Leyline is. I mean, I saw the episode in which
Gilliam said he would spill the beans, but it really
didn't tell me anything useful, except that it is this
black mass sitting in the middle of space and it emits
this sound that is not too much different from the Sirens
in the Odessey. And to think that in the prelude to the
episode, Gilliam said he would tell us what the Leyline
is. Oh well, maybe tomorrow, assuming I get to see it.
And why is it that the episode ended with that damn to
be continued right when it was getting good? As they
say, "ish" happens.
The song that Melfina sings at the end of the episode
(the first few, anyway) is very involving. In fact, it
had such a mysterious feeling, that I downloaded it from Napster. Now, if only I
spoke Japanese. Does anyone have a translation? At least
when Mel sang it in one episode, the translating company
had the decency to put that part in English, although it
does kind of lose that mystery. Ah well, as I said
earlier, "ish" happens.
After seeing the episode in which the MacDugall
brothers meet their end at the Leyline, I have a new
respect for all of the characters. Suzuka's reason for
tagging along has finally been revealed, and Aisha really
seemed worth having, as she proved herself again. Maybe
the next episode will reveal more about Melfina. I guess
we'll see.
I just bought the first DVD volume of Outlaw Star
(2/15/01) from Amazon.Com. Its features are by far
superior to that of the VHS, but I won't get into that.
If anyone out there is planning to buy the volumes, I
suggest you buy them from Amazon.Com as well because it
seems to be the cheapest.
It seems that the show was holding out until the end
to reveal what exactly the Leyline is. There were some
interesting twists in the episode, and you won't believe
what kind of ish (there's that word again) goes down.
